公元前六世紀(jì)，孔子（周潤發(fā) 飾）受到魯定公（姚魯 飾）賞識，從中督宰晉升為大司寇，這讓他得以實(shí)行自己的以禮治國的執(zhí)政理念。但是，三桓獨(dú)霸朝綱，也讓孔子感受到了重重阻力。他因阻止季桓子（陳建斌 飾）家奴免受陪葬，而與之結(jié)怨。他隨魯定公赴齊國會盟，與齊景公（馬精武 飾）和大夫黎鉏（王繪春 飾）斗智斗勇，維護(hù)了魯國的利益，討回三城，因此出任代國相。他提出隳三都的政策，引發(fā)佞臣謀反，在平叛之后，季桓子假傳圣旨，罷黜了孔子。從此，孔子率顏回（任泉 飾）、子路等弟子開始游歷各國。在衛(wèi)國，孔子得到衛(wèi)靈公的尊重，獲俸粟6萬石。他見到了衛(wèi)靈公的夫人南子（周迅 飾），并在交談中展現(xiàn)了正氣凜然的君子風(fēng)范…… 本片主題曲《幽蘭操》為歌后王菲息聲多年后復(fù)出之作。
